Week 3 Information

Salad Ingredients Wanted!
As a part of our Writing program this term we are expanding our knowledge on how to write a procedure. This week, we will be reading and writing a class recipe for a 'plant' salad. This Thursday 1st August we plan to make the salad, using ingredients from our own gardens (or fridges). We are asking that each child brings in one or two ingredients of their choice for our class salad on this day. Donations of lettuce, tomatoes, celery, carrots, fresh herbs, etc are all welcome! We will eat our salad as a recess snack (please pack some recess as normal, just in case).

Sight Words
A reminder that sight words are a continued part of our homework program this term. Please have a look at sight word tests that go home, as you will be able to see the words that your children require further consolidation with.

Assembly
As mentioned on our first blog post we have our Assembly coming up on Friday 17th August (week 5). The children will not require costumes as such, I am just asking them to come to school dressed in a particular colour.

The colours are as follows:
Red: James R, Allira, Lyla, and Harry
Yellow: Sara, Darcy, Jay, Evelyn and Thomas
Blue: Tristan, Charli, Luka, Max and Ruby
Purple: Archie, Milla, Kiana, James J and Summer
Orange: Marley, Kye, Scarlett, Isla and Jackson
Green: Harper, Oceania, Perri and Cameron

Good luck with colour hunting! More details will be provided about assembly in the coming weeks.

Have a fantastic week!

The Once-Ler Has Come to Town!

It has been a flurry of excitement in Year One since the Once-Ler came to school! On Monday Morning we were left with a letter and a pile of branches, as well as 'thneeds' on the classroom floor. Ever since, we have been trying to work out how we can get rid of the Once-Ler!

After doing a little 'Google' searching Miss Prowse and Mrs Sherborne have come across a procedure to get rid of the Once-Ler for good! This week we are in the process of learning the procedure which involves making a recipe that will scare the Once-Ler to run away and never return! Stay tuned for more updates on the Once-Ler.

Australian Once-Ler Coming to Year One

Good morning Parents,

Tomorrow morning, the classroom will be in a bit of a mess due to the Australian Once-Ler using our classroom for the beginning of it's factory!

In class, we have read the story of the Lorax. We are using this story as the base for our procedure writing unit. I have told the children that the Lorax was one of my favourite books when I was growing up and that it was based on people around the world cutting down trees to make new things. I explained that the Once-Ler (the villain in the story) was responsible for cutting down the trees and making onsie type pieces called thneeds.

The area that we live in would be the perfect place for the Once-Ler to come as we have so many beautiful trees around the Cape....so.... I will be running "late" on Monday morning and I will rush to the door at 8.30am where I will find the classroom covered in branches, thneeds and signs all over the door saying 'keep out'. The Australian Once-Ler will leave a note explaining that he will be back to set up his factory soon.

The premise of this will be that we have to write a procedure titled 'How to Get Rid of an Australian Once-Ler'. Mr. Wilkie or Mr. Torrese will be on the case on Monday asking the children for some ideas...

Keep an eye on the blog for progress on our procedure unit as the children use hand actions, various vocabulary and learn the structure of a procedure!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and the students are feeling refreshed and renewed after their two week break!

What's On This Term?
This term we are looking at a variety of topics and basing these concepts around the children's interests and ideas. We will be asking the children what they would like to learn about  in regards to these topics with a question box at the back of our room. The children always come up with some great ideas to guide their own learning!

Our writing focus this term will look at Procedures as well as Information Reports. Our Maths focus this term will be money, 2D and 3D shapes, measurement (capacity and length), addition and subtraction,  revision of skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's), place value revision and odd and even numbers.

In our HASS subject we will have a focus on things from the past and how children's daily lives differ from those of their parent's or grandparent's childhoods. At the end of the term we are planning a special excursion to explore life in the olden days first hand.

In Science we will be exploring how we can observe changes in the sky and landscape and how this can affect our ability to care for natural, managed and constructed features.

In Visual Arts we will be learning about colour (primary colours and how they mix to form secondary colours). We will experiment with some colour mixing and have a go at creating artworks using complementary colours.

OLC Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day was a huge success for Year 1S we had so many wonderful grandparents come in to celebrate this special OLC tradition. The day started with a beautiful prayer service dedicated to our beautiful Grandparents. The slide show that Mrs. Meyer put together was absolutely stunning and I can definitely vouch for some teary eyes in the crowd - including my own! The Grandparents then enjoyed a delicious morning tea and came into the classroom to participate in some activities.

The children loved showing their work to their grandparents, painting a picture with them, playing some Maths and sight words games and demonstrating how to use the iPads for learning.  The smiles from both children and grandparents alike were a wonderful sight to see!

A great morning was had by all, below are some pictures from the day.

Year One Bug Catchers

On Friday morning after assembly, Year 1S and Year 1P tackled the challenge of creating their very own bug catchers. After weeks of planning and designing their own creations, the children were delighted to be able to finally put their ideas into action! We are very thankful for all of our hands on parent helpers who gave up part of their Friday to sticky tape, hot glue and assist with refining the Year 1's designs. The project would not have happened without you!

After lunch, the Year 1's set off on an expedition into the bush to find as many bugs as they could. We came across a number of bees, spiders ants, snails and a few VERY LARGE bull ants. We discussed how we need to be safe when hunting for bugs, as well as how we also have the option of setting our bugs free after viewing them in our bug catchers. We hope you all had a lovely weekend exploring, hunting and collecting bugs!

Thank you again for all of the donations of items. As always, the parents are so supportive of our teaching and learning program!

Week 8 Information

The last two weeks of term are proving to be very busy and full of events! There was lots of important information in Friday's newsletter, so please take note of what's happening prior to the holidays.

Cross CountryA reminder that the children are asked to wear their coloured faction T-shirts for Cross Country on Thursday morning. Please refer to the newsletter and the email sent out today for further information on our whole school Cross Country event.

Refugee Rice DayMany thanks to the parent helpers who have volunteered to cook and serve lunch on Refugee Rice Day. The children who are having rice are asked to bring in an empty lunch container from home to save on waste.

Bug CatchersWe have planned to make our bug Catchers this Friday. The children have been busy collecting items as outlined in last week's blog post. We are still looking for parent helpers to make this activity possible and are happy to move the activity to straight after assembly if that would suit more people. Be prepared for lots cutting, gluing and taping!

Grandparents DayA reminder that all of our lovely grandparents and great grandparents are invited to school next Monday for our annual 'Grandparents Day'. Please return the RSVP slips for Grandparents Day by the end of this week. Mrs Meyer is also putting together a slide show of our grandparents. Please email through your pictures to her on amie.meyer@cewa.edu.au .

DiscoOur school disco will be held in the hall this Friday evening. If you would like to purchase tickets, please refer to the flyer in the newsletter.

Have a great week!
