End of Term Three Information

Shoe Boxes
Thank you all for your generous donations with the shoe boxes. They are being picked up this Friday and will be sent off to reach their destination by Christmas. The children had fun putting their items together and boxing their gifts up during our Religion lesson last week.

Think Mentals
This Friday units 14 and 15 are due to be completed in the Think Mentals book. During the week we reviewed the concept of 'near doubles', an important mental calculation strategy that is addressed in the Think Mentals text.

Spelling/Sight Word Revision

Below is the link to the spelling sounds covered in our differentiated spelling groups this term:
Although there is no homework allocated for holidays, it would be a great idea to revise the sounds that your child had been learning in their spelling group across the term. Just ask your child what colour group they are in! The holidays are also a fantastic time to revise sight words, I will make sure that all homework folders go home over the holidays so that your child has their sight words at home.

Calendar Orders
Our Calendar Art is in a display file by the classroom door. If you would like to purchase your child's artwork orders need to be in by Friday 13th October (week 1 of next term).

Prac Student
In week 2 next term we will have Miss Amy Bolton completing her four week teaching prac in our classroom. The Year Ones have already had a visit from Miss Bolton this week. Stay tuned for more information about Miss Bolton on our upcoming blog posts.

Colouring In Competition
Last week, some colouring in forms went home for the South West Wellness Expo. If your child wishes to enter their colouring into the competition, their entry must be at school by this Friday (tomorrow).

Rosters
The news roster for Term 4 went home today and our Parent Help Roster is up on the pin up board outside the classroom. Due to Miss Bolton being here from weeks 2-5 we are not requesting parent help until week 6 of next term.

Chicken Pox
There has been a reported case of the chicken pox in Year One. As there has only been one case reported, we can not send out an official letter to parents just yet. Please visit your local GP if you have any concerns over the holidays.

Assembly
Year 1R and 1P are coming together to present a Prayer Assembly on Friday 20th October (week 2). There will be no costumes required for this assembly and we will send allocated reading parts home early next term.

Thank you all for another wonderful term in Year One! I hope you enjoy a lovely holiday making the most of the time you have with your families. Bring on the Spring sunshine and warm weather again!

Children can bring their recess andlLunch as normal and limited canteen choices will be available on the day.

Wonnerup House Excursion this Friday

The children are getting excited for their excursion this Friday and we have been completing a few olden days activities in the class. The children are very excited to be dressing up in their olden days costumes. We ask for your child to bring sip and crunch and recess as normal and their lunch in a clearly labelled plastic bag (please no lunch boxes) with a water bottle. We are hoping for some lovely weather so keep your fingers crossed!

Week 7 Information

Shoeboxes
Thumbs up to those if you who have already brought in donations for our Christmas Shoeboxes. Please remember that we require $2.50 per child for the postage of these boxes. A note went home last week regarding what type of item we would like your child to donate. The girls are purchasing gifts for girls and the boys purchasing for boys. These gifts will bring a great smile to the children who receive them at Christmas time. Thank you all for your generosity!

Readers
Please remember to ensure that your children have their homework folders at school daily. We exchange readers in a Monday and Wednesday and require the children to have their homework folders at school to do this.
The reading log is also an important record that allows us to sight which texts have already been read by your child. Please ensure that you continue fill out this log each time your child completes a text.

Sight Words
Please continue to allocate some homework time towards practising sight words. As your child moves through each list, you will notice the words become progressively more difficult. Focusing on mastering 5 words at a time can be a great way to help your child progress through each list of words. It is great to see how eager many of the children are to be regularly tested on their sight words!

Jumps and Throws - Faction Uniforms
The Year Ones will be required to wear their sports uniforms (faction shirts) on the following two Tuesdays (5th September and 12th September). This is because the children will be doing their jumps and throws on these days. Sports uniform will also continue as normal on a Thursday and Friday. We will update you next week on the timetable for jumps and throws, should you wish to come along and watch.

Think Mentals
Our next Think Mentals units (units 12 and 13) are due next Friday 8th September.

Happy Father's Day to all of the Year One Dads! We hope you enjoy tasting your presents (please use your present by the 8th September).

Week 6 Information

SCHOOL PHOTOS
This Thursday the children will be having school photos. As per the information in the newsletter, the Year Ones will be required to come to school dressed in their full winter uniform (including jumpers) and are asked to have their sports uniforms, sneakers and socks stored inside a plastic bag in their school bags. It is a busy time, training for team games and races for our upcoming Athletics Carnival at the moment!

WONNERUP HOUSE EXCURSION
A letter will go home later this week, outlining our class excursion that will be coming up on Friday of Week 9. We are asking that the children come to school dressed as a child from the ‘Olden Days,’ to make our experience a little more authentic. The Year Ones have had a fabulous time learning about life in the olden days at school and this excursion will enable us to experience a taste of what life was like firsthand.

THINK MENTALS

Please note that our next two units of the the Think Mentals Book (Units 10 and 11) are due this Friday.

100 Days of School Celebration!

Good Afternoon Parents

100 Days of School
Next  Friday 25th August, we are celebrating 100 Days of Year One! We are a few days out from the actual date, however we have chosen a Friday to celebrate so that we can join classes  in a shared lunch from 12:30pm. To celebrate this wonderful milestone  we will be participating in a range of fun games and activities that will enable us to practice our number recognition to 100. We would really appreciate if the girls can bring a plate of sweet food to share and the boys, a plate of savoury food to share. Please ensure that there are no nuts, as we have children in our classes with allergies. The children (and teachers) are really looking forward to celebrating this special occasion together.

Mission Markets
We had a successful afternoon at the Mission Markets yesterday, raising $1256 for Caritas! What fun we had exploring through second hand books and toys, playing games and enjoying tasty treats from the cake stall. Thank you ever so much for your generous donations towards our Lucky Dip stall. See the pictures below for just a snippet of the fun that we had!

Think Mentals

Our next two Think Mentals units are due on Friday 25th August. Please ensure that your child has their Maths book packed into their homework folder on this day. The Units that need to be completed are Unit 10 and Unit 11. Thank you for your guidance and support with homework time.

Don't forget - this Friday is a Pupil Free Day!

OLC shoe boxes - Operation Christmas child

Good morning Parents,

Over the next couple of weeks, the Year One  children are going to participate in an initiative called 'Operation Christmas Child' which aims to pack a shoebox to give to a child who has never received a gift before. This ties into our school value of Compassion as we are helping less fortunate children in need.

Please see below an example shoe box:

Your child will be grouped with three other children to contribute and pack the shoebox. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child.  We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the shoebox.

Your child will bring home a note which shows you what kind of items can be sent away in the shoebox. We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Friday 8th September (end of week 8) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the O.L.C. Community for the last 14 years.

Thank you for your support.
